History has repeated itself since year 2007, where the final match was conquered by both UTM Teams. After four days of long battle, the champion was then decided when the organizer finally announced, “JUARA BAGI PERTANDINGAN ROBOCON MALAYSIA 2010 DIMENANGI OLEH PASUKAN UTM B !!!”

It was a long and tough journey. Days were never satisfying after we were dethroned 3 years ago. There’s a saying that goes, “The higher you climb, the harder you fall”.

Yet, we knew that it’s part of our life process. There’s nothing that goes up but never comes down. What matter is how resilient are we after the 2 years of defeat and how to get ourselves standing up again after the fall.

It was also the pain of defeat and the desire to fight back that brought us here today. Running with our victory flag around the game field, standing on this stage, waving our team’s banner, and proudly proclaim, “WE ARE THE CHAMPION ONCE AGAIN !!!”

Much tears and sacrifice has been made, but all that was out weighted by the cry of victory and the joy we shared on the stage. It was not simply the victory of individual, but a great victory for the whole team and the university, especially our team manager.

Yet, the champion title is not the only thing we brought back from the competition. This year, all three teams did not come back empty handed, as each of them was awarded something valuable from the game.

There are still a few weeks left before the international game, which will be held at Cairo, Egypt. Despite the victory, we knew that there is still much for us to improve, to modify and repair before we are ready to face the bigger challenge ahead, to stand side by side with the best teams from other countries.

Though I may not be able to join you guys at Egypt, my heart and support will never leave the team.

After 10 months struggling, the project is finally done. Though much sacrifice has been made, the end result and sense of satisfaction has outweighed the frustration I’ve endured.

Then came Mr. C.K. Wong who pursued me to join him in Diploma.

My 1st year of engineering study was Diploma in Electrical Engineering (Power), which deals with high voltage and high current devices, and the saying always goes, “Your first mistake will be your last!”

Thing too big = SCARED CANNOT TAKE IT~~~

Because of “takut mati“, I changed to Diploma in Electronic Engineering, which deals with smaller electronic devices. From there, I began to develop my interest in circuit design, electronic system, etc… but something’s lacking, I can’t see the end product of my effort, those “things” were too small!

Thing too small = NO SATISFACTION~~~

Because of “takut bosan“, I changed to Mechatronic Engineering for my degree study, which is the combination of electrical, mechanical, control and computer engineering.

Ya, I change plan very fast hor…?

To C.K. :- Thank you for your “brain washing” and the decision you have made for me. That single decision was a tipping point that has changed my life and I am grateful for what I’ve gained throughout the years.

Today’s exam paper, SEM 4153 – Robot Technology for Industrial Automation, marked the end of my 6 years engineering studies…

Despite everything is over, I spent the last two nights at lab (although most of the time I was sleeping here). The main reason is that I can’t seems to concentrate on my works when I’m in my room. The attraction of my sleeping bed was too great.

The another reason is this is the time when I have to rush all the long delayed assignments and projects which will due in these two weeks time. Can hardly squeeze sometime out for relaxation or preparation for my final exam, which will begin by next Monday.

The third reason, I’m starting to miss uni life (although I’m still here). These few days at lab reminds me of the time when I was still in the Robocon team. Seeing the juniors rushing their works, training, the cooperation between members and the laughter we shared together, I can’t help but to accept that I can hardly enjoy this joyful moment anymore in 1 month time.

My future, undecided… Probably won’t further for master at the moment, unless someone sponsor me . Got a job offer from a company at KL, so probably will give it a try first.

Til then…

OK you might start scratching your head now… what the hell is this? Well, it is a single wheel balancing robot. When I say SINGLE WHEEL, the wheel is actually just a red rubber ball, and the robot is balancing on top of it, without dropping of course. Cool huh?

But now all I did is just an ordinary two wheeled balancing robot. You might ask what’s so different between this and mine? Well…

1) Mine doesn’t have wireless remote control to make it move around.

2) Mine got no Graphical User Interface (GUI) to analyze the robot performance and system parameters.

3) Mine got no sensor to detect obstacles.

4) Mine is done by much trial and error, which spent me most of the time doing unnecessary testing and reconstruction.

5) Mine is still not balancing perfectly.

6) And most importantly, mine got an extra wheel… which makes the whole thing from cool become totally UNCOOL.

Tomorrow will be the “judgment day”. There is nothing much I can do right now in less than 24 hours. I am prepared to accept any harsh comments from the panels.

Wish me luck…

For those who don’t know what bothers me most for the past whole year and those who are not sure of what I’m crapping here , it’s my final year project… A two wheeled self balancing robot… Lots of trial and error involved and lots of frustration. Modification after modification, and now it’s finalized.

My very first version that didn’t work at all:

Weight: about 4 kg something (not including circuits and drivers)

Height: 0.7 meter

Reason of failure: The motors are too heavy, resulting low center of gravity.

The second version that’s unstable:

Weight: 2 kg

Height: 0.55 meter

Reason of failure: Frankly, I also don’t know what’s the reason… it balanced at one spot, then started swaying bigger and bigger, then fell. Maybe the algorithm was not right or suitable.

…And now, the third and final version.

Weight: 1.8 kg

Height: 0.36 meter

Deliverable: Uncertain, still in the process of tuning.

Gonna rush for the next few days… Hopefully everything goes well.
